What Is IGY6?
The Military Promise Behind
"I Got Your Six"

Three letters. One unbreakable promise. Here's where it came from — and why it still matters.

By Soldier Solutions · Published March 2026 · 8 min read

Here's your answer: IGY6 stands for "I Got Your Six" — military slang for "I've got your back." The "six" comes from clock-position language used in aviation and combat: twelve o'clock is straight ahead, six o'clock is directly behind you — your most vulnerable spot. Saying IGY6 is a promise. It means you're covered. No one fights alone.

The mission brief

Three Letters. One Unbreakable Promise.

In the military, your six is the direction you can't see. It's the blind spot. The angle you can't cover alone. When someone says "I've got your six," they're not making small talk — they're making a commitment. Your back is covered. Move forward. We've got you.

That's IGY6. And it didn't stay inside the wire.

Over the past two decades, IGY6 has moved from base to barracks to civilian life — worn on morale patches, tattooed on forearms, printed on veteran apparel, and spoken at funerals. It became a shorthand for something deeper than tactics: the promise that no veteran, no service member, no first responder, no struggling battle buddy fights alone. Not on our watch.

"I've got your six."

— A promise older than the phrase itself

Origin

Where "Six" Comes From

It starts in the cockpit. Fighter pilots used clock positions to call out threats — an enemy at "twelve o'clock" was dead ahead, "three o'clock" was to the right, and "six o'clock" was directly behind you. Six was the most dangerous position. The one you couldn't cover without a wingman.

Saying "I've got your six" meant your wingman was on your tail — a tactical statement, literal and life-or-death, with no room for misunderstanding. From aviation it moved into ground combat, where the same logic applied: your six is the direction you're exposed, and someone covering it is someone keeping you alive.

From there it moved into the broader military community. Then into veteran culture. Then everywhere people understand that some battles — combat, PTSD, addiction, grief, the transition home — aren't meant to be fought alone. That's when IGY6 stopped being just military slang and started being a movement.

Beyond the battlefield

IGY6 and the Invisible War

Here's why IGY6 hit different when it crossed into civilian culture: veterans come home, but the war doesn't always stay behind them.

PTSD, traumatic brain injury, isolation, unemployment, addiction — the transition from military service to civilian life is one of the hardest missions a veteran will ever run. And unlike combat, there's no unit around them. No battle buddy at three in the morning. No one automatically covering their six.

IGY6 became a response to that. A reminder. A signal that the community — veterans, military families, and the patriots who stand with them — is still there. The promise made in uniform doesn't expire when the uniform comes off. You'll see it on morale patches, on ink, on patriotic hoodies worn by veterans and the people who stand with them. It's a visible commitment: I see you. I've got you. You are not alone in this.

That's also why IGY6 connects so directly to what TADSAW does — because a trained service dog covering a veteran's six at 3 a.m. is IGY6 in its purest form.

Field note: the semicolon

You'll often see IGY6 written as ;IGY6 — with a semicolon in front. That semicolon is borrowed from the mental health awareness movement, where it represents a sentence the author could have ended but chose to continue. Life goes on. Combined with IGY6, the message is clear: your story isn't over, and you don't have to finish it alone.

FAQ

IGY6 — Your Questions Answered

1. What does IGY6 mean?

IGY6 stands for "I Got Your Six" — military slang for "I've got your back." The "six" refers to the six o'clock position directly behind you — your blind spot and most vulnerable angle. The phrase originated in aviation and combat as a tactical commitment between teammates. Today it carries that same weight in veteran communities, veteran mental health advocacy, and anyone who stands with the people who serve.

2. Where did the phrase "I Got Your Six" come from?

It originated in military aviation. Pilots used clock positions to report threats — twelve o'clock straight ahead, six o'clock directly behind. Since six was the hardest position to defend on your own, a wingman covering your six meant you were protected at your most vulnerable angle. The phrase moved from cockpit to ground combat and eventually into broader military and veteran culture.

3. What does the semicolon mean in ;IGY6?

The semicolon comes from the mental health awareness movement, where it symbolizes a sentence the author could have ended but chose to continue. It represents survival, continuation, and hope. Combined with IGY6, the message is clear: your story isn't over, and you don't face it alone. You'll see ;IGY6 worn especially in connection with veteran suicide prevention and PTSD awareness.

4. Is IGY6 only for military and veterans?

No. IGY6 belongs to anyone who means it. Military families, first responders, civilians who support veterans, mental health advocates — if you understand the promise and you're ready to stand behind it, the gear is for you. Wearing it is a visible signal: I see you. I'm here. You are not alone. That message isn't gatekept by a DD-214.

5. How does buying IGY6 gear from Soldier Solutions support veterans?

Two ways. First, Soldier Solutions is patriot-owned and veteran-operated — your purchase directly supports veteran employment, with over 35 veterans on the team. Second, a portion of every IGY6 sale goes to TADSAW (Train a Dog Save a Warrior) through Operation Companion — funding trained service dogs for veterans dealing with PTSD and TBI. Your gear does real work.

6. What is TADSAW and what do they do?

TADSAW — Train a Dog Save a Warrior — is a nonprofit that pairs trained service dogs with veterans living with PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and the invisible wounds of combat. These dogs aren't just companions — they work. They interrupt anxiety episodes, create physical space in overwhelming environments, wake veterans from nightmares, and provide around-the-clock stability. Learn more at the TADSAW page.

7. What's the difference between IGY6 and "We Got Your Six"?

Same promise, different framing. IGY6 is the individual commitment — I personally have your back. "We Got Your Six" expands that to the whole community — the team, the family, the mission. At Soldier Solutions, both phrases carry the same weight. Whether it's one person showing up for another or an entire community standing behind a veteran, the six is covered.

8. Is IGY6 connected to veteran suicide prevention?

Yes — and that connection is real and intentional. The veteran suicide crisis is one of the most serious issues facing the community. According to the VA's most recent annual report, approximately 17–18 veterans die by suicide every day. IGY6 — especially in its ;IGY6 form — is worn as a direct response to that reality. It's a public signal that says: I'm paying attention. I'm not looking away. If you're struggling, reach out — your six is covered. If you or someone you know is in crisis, contact the Veterans Crisis Line at 988 (press 1).

9. What IGY6 clothing and gear does Soldier Solutions sell?

The IGY6 collection includes men's and women's t-shirts, hoodies, and accessories — all featuring IGY6, We Got Your Six, My Guardian Angel, and related designs. Every item is built for comfort and durability with bold graphics that carry the message. A portion of every purchase supports TADSAW service dogs through Operation Companion.

10. Is Soldier Solutions a veteran-owned business?

Soldier Solutions is patriot-owned and veteran-operated. Founded by Frank Quagliano, the company was built specifically to employ veterans and support the community — not as a side mission, but as the whole point. Over 35 veterans work in the operation. Every product, every purchase, and every partnership ties back to that commitment. Patriot-owned. Veteran-operated. On our watch.
